“You might be surprised…there are things that Web View does better than Database View now,” Stacy Cope
If you’re still clinging to Database View in Raiser’s Edge, you’re not alone. Many fundraisers and database administrators have built complex, customized workflows in RE7—but with Blackbaud moving toward a full Web View future, it’s time to get comfortable with what’s ahead. In a recent PSG webinar, Stacy Cope, Austen Brown, and Andy Schroeder break down the difference between query-building in Web View and Database View, what’s changed, what still needs work, and how you can prepare for a smoother transition.
What’s the main difference between Database View and Web View in Raiser’s Edge?
Database View (RE7) has been the go-to interface for data-heavy users, while Web View was originally built for major gift officers. But Blackbaud is now expanding Web View to support full functionality—including query building, reporting, and automations.
Why are fundraisers and DBAs nervous about the move to Web View?
Change is hard. Users worry about losing access to functions they’re familiar with or having to recreate custom reports in a new interface. Some features are still missing, but PSG is part of early access programs and confirms progress is steady.
What should users know about reporting in Web View?
Standard reporting is improving, and optional add-ons like Insight Designer let you build interactive dashboards. AutomateGenius can also be used for more action-oriented reporting, like daily donor digests or pre-written emails.
What about complex reports built in Crystal or Access—are they at risk?
Yes. Many of those reports won’t carry over to the web version. Now is the time to audit which reports you rely on and rebuild them using Web View’s tools or PSG’s automation options.
Are queries fully functional in Web View?
The interface is evolving quickly. You can now merge queries, create donor lists, and assign actions—all from the browser. With a few best practices, it’s a powerful option even for advanced users.
The shift from Database View to Web View isn’t just inevitable—it’s already underway. But that doesn’t mean you’re left in the dark. By understanding how Web View handles queries today—and where it still falls short—you’ll be better positioned to modernize your reporting and reduce reliance on outdated tools like Crystal Reports or Access.
As Andy Schroeder said, ‘The biggest thing is, so many reports were cobbled together because there was no other solution. Now, there’s a cleaner, more powerful way to do it.’
